it's incredible!" Ginger thought to herself as she beheld an endless ocean of glittering stars and planets on such a clear night. The view from her spot atop this sea-cliff was her favorite for stargazing. It always brought back memories of her first time here, but the clouds had been thick lately. This was the first clear night in what felt to her like ages. Although she was overjoyed at this amazing sight, a tear slowly began to blur her vision. As the starlight contorted and the brightest star became cross-like in shape, she instantly thought back to the last time she had seen a four pointed star
It was nearly an entire year ago, and Ginger was certain that this would be a miserable day. Not only had she woken up to discover that the group she had been wandering around with for the last month had abandoned her and taken with them her precious bell bracelet, but it was raining, and she hated to get wet.
NO! Noooooo! You stupid
ugh, I trusted you
" she called out to the pouring grey sky. As she did a massive thunderclap resounded and a bright flash tore through the air. Although not normally afraid of storms, Ginger shrieked and jumped, and felt more vulnerable than ever. She missed her home, where her closest friends were awaiting her return.
Mewy had been the last person she spoke too before coming out here in hopes that a map she had found would lead her to its promised treasure. "Wait
No! Not the map too!" It had been folded and tucked into her bracelet. Now her tears were falling like the rain, and another lightning strike flashed, but this one seemed different. It wasn't as loud and it seemed to be concentrated. Ginger didn't notice this at first but when it happened two more times in a matter of thirty seconds, her curiosity was master. She ran into the woods (and was thankful for the dense tree cover) as she looked in the direction the lightning had hit. Only about one hundred feet away, she could see smoke where the strikes had been. She ran to the smoldering spot, compelled by an unknown excitement that had replaced her sadness. She was shocked at what she found. One foot from the burned area was a Pokémon, a Shinx, collapsed in the rain. "Oh! Hey you, wake up! Did you do this? Come on, answer me
" she pleaded. The poor thing looked hurt. Just then, his body stirred and he mumbled something incoherent. "What did you say?"
" he said softly as he tried to get up and collapsed again.
"What!? How do you know my name!?"
found my name?" she said, now concerned and confused. The Shinx was now able to at least roll over to a more comfortable position and open his eyes, which took a moment to focus, and there standing over him was Ginger.
are Ginger? I have been looking for you," responded the now responsive Shinx.
"Wait, back up. Why are you looking for me?"
"I saw a group of treasure hunters looking at a map, and I asked them if I could come too, but they told me that they had already stolen the map from somebody and left because they wanted to split the treasure three ways instead of four. I think they were surprised when I got angry to hear that, and before they could react I took the bag they put the map away in. When I took it out to look at it, I only found one more thing in there; it is a bracelet that says "To Ginger" inside it. So I knew the map belonged to you
" The Shinx explained, revealing the small blue bracelet that he was laying on top of.
"M-My bell!? Oh, thank you so much! You can never know how much this means to me! What is your name anyway? Do you still have the map!? You can come with me I promise!" The string of questions were still getting through the Shinx's groggy head.
"My name is Voltaire
you can call me Volt if you want. And about the map
when I was looking for Ging- or, I mean you, the storm started, and my static drew in a big lightning strike. I was actually struck multiple times right here
it burned up the map," Voltaire said, and he saw the sad look on Ginger's face. "It's ok Ginger, I looked at the map for a while because I was interested. I know the place where the treasure is, I have been there before! And
there really is a treasure!" he added. Ginger lit up upon hearing this and hugged the finally standing Shinx.
"Oh Volt, will you please take me there!? I wish like nothing else to go back home to my friends and family successfully! I came out here to prove myself a true adventurer!"
"Of course I will, you seem like a deserving Eevee, one worthy of the treasure of the stars!"
"Treasure of the Stars!?" she replied, her eyes lighting up at the sound of something so amazing. "Well let's go as soon as the rain stops!"
"Yeah, it is close to here Ginger, only one day's worth of walking. We should get going now though,"
"He is right, the other's might get there first!" she thought, and so the two began their walk. Along the way, they were silent, and Ginger kept feeling sad for Voltaire. He was probably tired and hurt from the lightning strike and yet he wanted to help her out so badly. She once more yearned for home but refused to give up. "Hey Volt, are you feeling ok? You look upset"
"I have a secret, but it is weighing on me and I can't tell anybody," he replied softly, barely audible over the rain.
can you tell me? I can keep a secret!"
it isn't really a happy or special secret. It's that I am alone, I am a social outcast. I don't have family or friends where I come from because
I ran away after my mother died and my father stopped caring about everything, including me
and I don't want to lose you after I take you to the treasure Ginger. You are the closest thing I have to a friend!"
"Oh Volt! I
I don't know what to say, I would never abandon you!" They had stopped walking and there was a moment where the only sounds were those of the storm, and then Voltaire's eyes filled up.
"You mean it?"
"Of course!" The pair embraced once more and then continued on their way, sharing stories and enjoying having company. Ginger had nearly forgotten having been abandoned and robbed. They never stopped to rest, because both were too excited to reach the place that Voltaire kept calling Evernova Hill. The rain has stopped about an hour ago, and now they had arrived at their destination.
this is Evernova Hill. It's the location of the treasure!" Voltaire shouted proudly. He looked at the rapidly dispersing clouds and appeared nervous for some reason.
sea cliff?" Ginger asked, looking out at the vast ocean below. But
where can you hide treasure here!? Volt
" The Shinx looked at her and smiled, and sat down at her side.
"You will see, I promise! The clouds are going away at a rate that will make this perfect
it won't be dark for another hour though
" he said. Ginger had no idea what to think, she simply trusted that her new friend wasn't simply using her for the company. She found herself unable to stay awake and was soon in a dream where her friends welcomed her home with disappointed looks, as she had brought home nothing. Just as soon as her dream had begun, however, she was awakened by Voltaire pawing her and crying her name in excitement.
"Volt, what is
Oh my god
" She looked up to the sky, which was completely cloudless, and could not believe her eyes. There were millions of visible stars that lit the night and made the air shine with brilliance. "Is this
is this the Treasure of the Stars!? It's
breath taking! Volt, this is the most amazing thing I have ever seen!"
"You know, they say that every living thing has a star of its own. You do too, and so did my mother and everybody else in the world. Legend says that you can see them all here. It's the greatest treasure I have ever found
"Everybody? Where is your star Volt?" she asked with a kind smile and lit up eyes that twinkled as if they too were stars.
"Mine? It's right here!" He said, waving his tail-star. Ginger laughed and said,
"Then what about mine?"
"Where is Ginger's star, hmm? Close your eyes and think of what makes you happiest in the world, then open your eyes and look up, you will see it!" so she did just as he instructed. When she opened her eyes, one star out of millions seemed to be shining the brightest, and Ginger instantly felt even happier and as she turned to look at Volt again, he was gone. Nowhere to be found.
"Volt? Where are you!?" she called. But all that was left in his place was a small note. It was a torn off part of the map, Ginger recognized it. It said:
"Ginger, I am writing this while you sleep and I am so excited for you to find the treasure. I will always be here, with the stars, because I am one of them. I cannot lie to you, when lightning struck me, it killed me, but
nobody would ever know. Besides, you needed your bracelet back, right? I'm sorry I had to go like this, but I will never be gone. Now that somebody knows the truth about me and I can finally join mother, I will always be right here, and you can see me on a clear night. Just think of me the way you thought of your happy memory and MY star will shine.
I will never forget, thank you Ginger.
By the time she had finished, she could not stop her tears. She had found her treasure, and would now return home prouder than she ever could be. She didn't care if nobody believed her either, she would treasure this gift always
* * *
As Ginger's tear fell, she snapped back to the present. She had come back to remember, and now one star shone brighter than all the others.
I didn't forget you! I just wanted to say thanks again
and I will never stop coming here every year until the day I can join you and all the other stars!
Ginger" She wrote in a note and left it as she had left his there the last time. The ocean breeze took it away instantly and it flew into the air and out of sight among the dazzling sky, and Ginger fell asleep in the same spot she had one year ago on Evernova Hill.
